Reading Proficiency - 8th Grade
Definition

Percentage of 8th-grade students who perform at or above proficient in reading, 2015.

Description

Educational attainment is a major factor in an individual’s future earning power, and the reading skills that students have by middle school are critical to future academic success. Students who fail to demonstrate grade level proficiency in reading may also struggle in other subject areas like math or science where reading difficulties may inhibit their ability to understand and solve problems. In addition, these students are at risk of being tracked into non-college prep courses in high school, which can perpetuate the process of falling behind and exclude them from opportunities for higher learning.
